Olympic weightlifting is a sport in which athletes compete to lift the greatest amount of weight overhead within an athlete’s weight category. The competition lifts are the Snatch and then the Clean & Jerk in that order. Each weightlifter receives three attempts in each lift. The combined total of the highest successful attempt for each lift determines the athlete’s placing within their respective category.
In all lifts, the Referees must count a “No lift” as any unfinished attempt in which the barbell has left the platform and has not successfully been locked out with control overhead. After the Referees signal to lower the barbell, the lifter must settle the barbell to the platform. The grip on the barbell may be released when it has passed the level of the shoulders. Lifters are not permitted to have any substance on their thighs when arriving in the competition area. A lifter who uses any lubricant is ordered to remove it. During the removal, the clock goes on. The use of chalk (magnesium) on the hands, thighs, etc., is permitted.
